By eating food that was manufactured in your country or even more locally, you are not only helping your nation's economy (and supporting farmers directly) but you are also reducing how much polution you are causing indirectly through consumption. If you live in an apartment and do not have a small plot of land to call your own, you can grow some herbs and vegetables provided you have some sunny spots at home and the willingness to be creative.

Eating local - even during the winter!

When Montreal winters hit us with snow and freezing rain, local eating may seem like a far-gone fantasy. In spite of this, a portion of your food can still come from local sources. (Yes, even if you didn't sign-up for a weekly CSA basket or spend a long autumn weekend canning tomatoes.)

What can you find?

Local vegetables such as potatoes and carrots can be sold well into the winter months - a walk through the produce section of your grocery store might surprise you! Look for the logos on the left.

The winter markets of Northern Virginia

Do you want to support your local producers but wonder where you can buy local products in January? Just because it's the dead of winter doesn't mean you can't find a local weekend market offering baked products, herbs, honey, meats, teas, prepared foods, crafts, and yes, even produce in the winter months. Northern Virginia has some farmers' markets open Saturdays or Sundays year round that are well worth a visit.
