Air Travel: Many people travel by airplane, but have you ever thought about how traveling by airplane effects the environment? One air mile creates 53.3 pounds of carbon dioxide. Therefore one flight from New York, NY to Los Angeles, CA (about 2,450 miles) produces a little over 65 short tons of carbon dioxide. An average plane holds 200-500 passengers; 0.24 pounds of CO2 is released per passenger per mile. Therefore one flight from New York to Los Angeles, CA with 200 passengers releases 117,600 pounds of CO2. If the flight has 500 passengers it would release 294,000 pounds of CO2 (http://blueskymodel.org).
